With the highly anticipated final season of Squid Game just around the corner, lead actor Lee Jung-jae has opened up about his mixed emotions ahead of the show's grand finale. The Emmy-winning star, who portrays protagonist Seong Gi-hun, admitted feeling both excitement and nerves as fans prepare for the thrilling conclusion.
The streaming giant Netflix unveiled an electrifying trailer during its recent Tudum event, officially announcing June 27 as the premiere date for what promises to be an unforgettable ending. The new season will pick up with Gi-hun's dramatic return to the deadly competition after his rebellion was crushed in Season 2.
"We're releasing it very soon, and honestly, I'm filled with nervous energy," Jung-jae confessed to The Hollywood Reporter while walking the red carpet at the event. "There's this incredible anticipation - we've poured our hearts into this final chapter."
The actor continued: "I know millions are wondering what twists Season 3 holds, but truthfully? Our entire team is even more curious about how audiences will react. The wait is almost over - and yes, my heart races just thinking about it."
Jung-jae's portrayal of Gi-hun earned him television's highest honor in 2022 when he took home an Emmy Award. Under his powerful performance and director Hwang Dong-hyuk's visionary storytelling,Squid Game shattered records to become one of Netflix's most-watched series ever during its record-breaking 2024-25 run.
The show isn't just breaking viewership records—it has also made history by becoming one of only three non-English language shows nominated for Best Drama Series at both last year’s Golden Globes and Emmys (joining France’s “Lupin” and Germany’s “Dark”). Additionally marking another milestone achievement; earlier today Netflix announced via social media that they had renewed their contract with director Hwang Dong Hyuk through at least two additional projects beyond ‘SQUID GAME’. This news comes hot off heels from yesterday where Deadline reported exclusively regarding negotiations between studio heads & talent agencies concerning possible spin-offs set within same universe but following different characters/games…though nothing concrete yet!
